A Wondrous World of Words

When I was a little girl, books were as good as magic to me. I’d crack open the pages and the sweet scent of paper and ink would draw me deeper. The words whisked me away on unexpected adventures full of new ideas. The possibilities were endless. Would I travel to a new planet? Or to the depths of the ocean? What new friends would I meet on the journey, and what challenges would we overcome before the final paragraph?

At the age of five, authors Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault (Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Barn Dance, Knots on a Counting Rope) visited our Indiana farm town. I sat cross-legged on the gym’s wood floor, my round eyes wide with delight as the tall, dark-haired author recited lines from one of the books. If books were magic, these two men were magicians — weaving stories into existence, right out of thin air!

That was the moment that my life’s passion, deeply engraved on my heart, came to life. I needed to be just like them. I needed to write — to create epic adventures, bring hope to others, and explore truth. Every word created the ability to transform my heart and the world around me.

I filled myriad pages with ideas, drawings, stories — the scribblings of my heart. Over time, my writing began to improve. I wrote to explore life’s questions and the possibilities that might answer them. I came across other writers — magicians in their own right — as they crafted their own stories, both fiction and non-fiction. Forming friendships with these amazing people has encouraged me and propelled me forward.

Waking up every day to write is one of the greatest blessings of my life. Has it been easy? No. I’m sometimes asked what the road to writing has looked like for me and I answer, “There was a road?” The writing has been more like an off-road obstacle course but, you know what? That’s what makes it an adventure! And I love every moment of it, with all its twists and turns. Writing is just like being lost in a good book — you never know where the next page will take you!

I invite you to come along with me on this amazing journey. Let’s explore the wondrous world of words, discover the secrets that lie in wait, and make some magic — together.
